BLOGATHON: Spin-Off

Read Time:2 Minute, 22 Second

Know what fate is? Building a bridge of chance for someone you love.”  — My Sassy Girl, 2001

Well, this thought-provoking blogathon is hosted by Sati of cinematiccorner. Yet, I personally thank Caitlin of heartofcinema for introducing me to this blogathon.

The idea of this blogathon is quite simple: picking up a minor character from a movie, then using imaginations to put that character into a stand-alone movie in which he/she/it becomes the main character.

To find out more about this blogathon, please visit the ORIGINAL PAGE in Sati’s blog. Enjoy!

After some hustles, I finally made my own choice. And my choice is…

If you have watched original My Sassy Girl (2001), you’ll know that Gyeon Woo (portrayed by Cha Tae-hyun) and The Girl (Jun Ji-hyun) have decided to finally be apart. Yet, before that, they plant their letters to each other under a tree and promise to see each other again a year after to read those letters.

Gyeon Woo comes a year after that separation, but The Girl doesn’t; as she simply comes two years following the separation. When she gets there, she meets a mysterious old man (portrayed by Yoo Soon-cheol) wearing a jacket that looks like Gyeon Woo’s and she finally gets advised by this unknown man (as illustrated below).

Rumour has it this old man is Gyeon Woo’s future self who turns back in time without any clear purpose–he could possibly just want to remember his younger self by or he could also possibly want to advise The Girl. A UFO sighting right after this scene might prove this theory—yet, how he appears when Gyeon Woo meets The Girl for the first time and Gyeon Woo’s last line in this film saying “Think it’s coincidence?” really tell me who this man really is.

If a movie should be made about him, I really expected that movie should reveal the true motive beyond his presence in My Sassy Girl. I like to think that this old man is no other than Gyeon Woo’s old self—and investigating how he could travel back in time, what his true motive is, and even how he manages to be thin will be very intriguing. Well, so… a sci-fi romcom it is and reminding me to About Time it is.

The UFO sighting in My Sassy Girl…

The fact that this romcom is adapted from a true story (in a Korean blog) makes such kind of movie impossible and implausible. Yet, thinking of how such kind of movie will be made is always tickling me—since it will blend many genre of movies into one reflective movie about an old man. Aspiring!

So… what character will you choose for a spin-off?

Thanks so much for participating! This seems like a lovely movie, didn’t they remake it with much simpler and impoverished plot into American movie with S. Bullock? Seems like something Hollywood would do.

Well, I’ve just wanted to inform you about my participation on this blogathon!
A typical Hollywood movie—they strip off the not-so-coincidental things on this movie lol
