Thursday Movie Picks #6: Romantic Comedies

Read Time:1 Minute, 47 Second

Happy Thursday from Indonesia again! Back to Thursday Movie Picks hosted by Wandering through the Shelves Blog again.

The series is getting much more interesting now; new theme’s coming every week and it gets more and more fun. For further details about this series, please visit the series main page here.

This week’s Thursday Movie Picks is Romantic Comedy, and here comes my picks:

01. (500) Days of Summer (2009): Who doesn’t like this romance? I never know whether Tom (Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Deschanel) were making a romantic comedy, but the bittersweet of their relationship is just too ridiculous and sweet at once. Oh, well, Tom is over-sensitive as a boy while Summer is completely bipolar; and they make a cute couple, who shouted “P*nis!” in crowd, or made out in an IKEA store, or even argued about who’s gonna be Sid or Nancy.

02. I’m Cyborg but That’s OK (a.k.a Saibogujiman Kwenchana) (2006): It’s the sanest movie from Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Stoker, et al) but for me it’s a great romantic comedy although both elements were not as obvious as it seems. It takes places in a mental hospital and what we see is a couple of mentally distracted people trying to get attached to each other without realizing it. One is a girl who thinks she’s a cyborg and the other is a man who thinks he can steal everything, including people’s soul. Sane, yes? Romantic, yes? Hilarious, yes?

03. My Sassy Girl (2002): This is my favorite romantic comedy ever (though the remake version didn’t nail it the way the original did). A boy—left from his aunt who wanted to acquaint him to a girl he doesn’t know—met a broken-hearted girl on a subway; and what happens after that is all the ridiculous thing. This is, I might say, a romantic comedy version of Gone Girl relationship. And remember, this is a beautiful Korean movie made before all the pretty Korean stars were known. OH, THIS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

So, that’s my list; have a great Thursday everybody! Oh, 2 Korean movies there.

  1. Great picks! I haven’t seen your second pick, but I liked 500 Days of Summer and My Sassy Girl (totally prefer this over the remake).

    1. You should see it, then tell me if its worth to watch. Cause even Im not sure whether it’s a romantic comedy. Anyway, thanks for stopping by.

  2. 500 Days of Summer far exceeds the expectations of the genre it has unfortunately been lumped into. It’s a wonderful film – sharp, and fresh!

    1. True that! It’s beyond what everyone can expect, right? Love it!!!

  3. I’m a Cyborg but That’s OK has been on my shelf forever and I still haven’t got to it yet. My Sassy Girl I know is extremely popular, especially in Asia I think, but it didn’t quite win me over. The “sassy” girl is a little too manic for me. (500) Days of Summer on the other hand I absolutely love.

    1. You need to see the Cyborg, but I think you need to see other Chan-wook’s movies as well 🙂 well, the sassy girl is quite unrealistic and too good to be true, but I liked it best!
Glad we’re on the same side on Summer!

I love 500 Days of Summer! Such a fantastic film. I’ve never seen the other two, but they sound really interesting. Especially Cyborg, I loved Oldboy and Stoker.

    1. Glad you liked 500 Days of Summer, too! Cyborg is real funny, but it’s different from any of Chan-wook’s movies

  5. I’ve only seen 500 Days, and I absolutely love that movie! Your second choice intrigues me…a lot.

    1. Glad that you like Summer, too. Yeah, you gotta check the other choices cause they’re worth a watch

  6. I’ve only seen 500 Days of Summer. Almost went with that one myself. Thanks for the recommendations. Always looking for new stuff.

Good list! I will add My Sassy Girl to my to-watch list. This is a terrific site, by the way. I love your clever blog title.

    1. Thanks! I’m glad I can give you some suggestion 🙂
