This week’s theme is All in the Family Edition: Father-Son Relationships (Biologically Related). Without further ado, I bring you my picks—a tribute to 2014 with all movies from that year:
01. Chef (2014)
The main cuisine served by Chef is, obviously, the delight of the culinary movie wrapped in a road-movie style, yet, we will never forget the appetizer: the father-son relationship between Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) and his son, Percy (Emjay Anthony). Their relationship is the motive and the vehicle that make Chef exist. Carl might be upset with him being scolded in the beginning, but the energy fueled by his fondness to the loves of his life—cooking and a son—saves him from his downfall. 02. The Judge (2014)
Perhaps, this is the most complicated father-son relationship in 2014—with the cocky son, Hank (Robert Downey, Jr.) attempting to override his convicted father, Joseph (Robert Duvall), in the mean time, they’re trying to save each other. This courtroom drama has, perhaps, the shades of nostalgia to this early 90s genre and to Duvall’s good ol’ days; yet, that won’t matter until you understand the bond of an estranged family tried to be saved by this bittersweet relationship. 03. Boyhood (2014)
Boyhood is an obvious choice for this theme. Although it’s all about a boy with his life for 12 years, there’s no way we ignore the father-son relationship between Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke) and Mason Jr. (Ellar Coltrane). The latter is a carbon copy of the former, and what happen to the latter is more and less consequences of what the former did. Junior always love hanging out with his biological father despite the divorce; they always get in touch even when Senior has already had a new family. There’s a strong bond between the two of them that we can feel—and, oh that “my car” scene in Ethan Hawke’s Oscar nomination scene—there’s no way it doesn’t get my attention. Click here for the full review!
