Thursday Movie Picks #9: All in the Family Edition: Father-Son Relationships (Biologically Related)

Read Time:2 Minute, 7 Second

It’s the post-Oscar Thursday Movie Picks coming to its 9th episode in 2015, as it’s still hosted by Wandering through the Shelves Blog.

Never been too late to join us. Please visit the series main page here.

This week’s theme is All in the Family Edition: Father-Son Relationships (Biologically Related). Without further ado, I bring you my picks—a tribute to 2014 with all movies from that year:

01. Chef (2014)

The main cuisine served by Chef is, obviously, the delight of the culinary movie wrapped in a road-movie style, yet, we will never forget the appetizer: the father-son relationship between Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) and his son, Percy (Emjay Anthony). Their relationship is the motive and the vehicle that make Chef exist. Carl might be upset with him being scolded in the beginning, but the energy fueled by his fondness to the loves of his life—cooking and a son—saves him from his downfall. 02. The Judge (2014)

Perhaps, this is the most complicated father-son relationship in 2014—with the cocky son, Hank (Robert Downey, Jr.) attempting to override his convicted father, Joseph (Robert Duvall), in the mean time, they’re trying to save each other. This courtroom drama has, perhaps, the shades of nostalgia to this early 90s genre and to Duvall’s good ol’ days; yet, that won’t matter until you understand the bond of an estranged family tried to be saved by this bittersweet relationship. It’s hard and melancholic, but it deserves it. Click here for the full review!

03. Boyhood (2014)

Boyhood is an obvious choice for this theme. Although it’s all about a boy with his life for 12 years, there’s no way we ignore the father-son relationship between Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke) and Mason Jr. (Ellar Coltrane). The latter is a carbon copy of the former, and what happen to the latter is more and less consequences of what the former did. Junior always love hanging out with his biological father despite the divorce; they always get in touch even when Senior has already had a new family. There’s a strong bond between the two of them that we can feel—and, oh that “my car” scene in Ethan Hawke’s Oscar nomination scene—there’s no way it doesn’t get my attention. Click here for the full review!

So, that’s some movies depicting father-son relationship that go to my list. So, how’s your list?

  1. I’ve seen bits of Chef. It’s a very fun movie 😀

    1. That’s a real deal… I love that one!

  2. I really liked Boyhood, more than quite a sizable number in the blogger world who prefer Birdman. The relationship was great, but for me I felt the relationship with the other fathers was simplistic, to me the film suggests that the only positive relationship you can have with a father is with a biologically related one.

    1. Glad you appreciated it more 🙂 true that, the relationship with the biological father is tied with an unseen bond that, perhaps, Linklater tries to highlight in a world where divorce become a common issue

  3. I hadn’t heard of Chef until now but it really sounds worth checking out. Already added it to my queue. I’m not the biggest RDJ fan but I love Robert Duvall and courtroom dramas so I’m sure I’ll be catching up with The Judge. Sorry but I loathed Boyhood. It does fit the theme well though.

    1. Sure you should check Chef (with all the foody visuals) and The Judge! Well, Boyhood began to feel divisive now 🙂

  4. Ethan Hawke was by far the best thing about Boyhood, a movie I really liked but didn’t love as much as a lot of others. Chef is a good choice. Really satisfying movie. I’ve yet to see The Judge. Good move picking some new movies.

    1. I do agree that Ethan Hawke was the best thing of Boyhood along with Patricia Arquette, ’cause I think they’re the real stars of that movie.
Well, seemingly 2014 has some good shades of this theme!

Great list! I haven’t seen The Judge and Boyhood yet, but I definitely want to.

    1. Thanks! You definitely should check 🙂

  6. You have two newer flicks…I haven’t them yet but they do seem to fit this week’s theme perfectly.

Chef I’ve seen and I liked the father son relationship in which it’s the son that actively tries to be in his father’s life.

    1. True! And those 3 had different kind of father-son relationship (from my POV)

  7. I won’t speak of Boyhood…

But I love the Chef choice! Such a sweet little movie.

    1. Seems like everyone won’t talk about Boyhood no more lol. Chef fits the theme well and I always highlight it as a generation-gap movie, that’s why I picked it.

    1. Thanks, Brittani! Chef’s indeed delighting

  9. Great choices, I really liked Chef and Boyhood! Both are great father-son moves.

    1. Finally got someone who loved Boyhood as a father-son movie!

  10. Three films am yet to see but all seem great choices.
