Thursday Movie Picks #35: All in the Family Edition – Stepfamilies

Read Time:1 Minute, 7 Second

End of August is around the corner; and since this is the last Thursday in August, Thursday Movie Picks hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves returns with All in the Family Edition. As for this month, the specific theme is Stepfamilies.

Although I had it in mind from the beginning, please rest assured, Cinderella is not on my list. Yet, I promise there will be no happy movies picked. Beware, there will be spoilers; read on your own risk.

So, here’s my picks.

01. Pan’s Labyrinth (2009)

Guillermo del Toro’s award-showered fairy tale is one of Sinekdoks’ most favorite movies of all time. The main protagonist, Ofelia along with her mother lived with her step-father, a fascist leader on a guerrilla. Living with a step-father with position isn’t actually things that made her happy; if it did, she wouldn’t find the labyrinth.

02. A Tale of Two Sisters (2002)

Sometimes, a step-mother is a menace in movies or stories. Cinderella is an example. Yet, A Tale of Two Sisters is a redefinition of that premise.

03. Dead Silence (2006)

Well, it’s not the main plot device in Dead Silence, but knowing your step-mother is a way to get away from being a puppet or being in a macabre family portrait.

So, that’s my picks. Hit the comment button, please.

I haven’t seen Dead Silence but I love your other two picks! I used Pan’s Labyrinth already and I’ve got Tale of Two Sisters saved for a later one. Excellent films.

    1. That must be great! Glad you loved them.
Dead Silence is clever although it can be better, but still I recommend it 🙂

  4. So happy to see A Tale of Two Sisters get picked. I would’ve picked it myself, but I already used it for an earlier Thursday and don’t want to repeat myself. Instead, I used my picks to bash the American remake. Love Pan’s, too. Haven’t seen Dead Silence. Keep meaning to, but never got around to it for some reason.

    1. It also came twice for my pick, I just love how it become the dynamo for the plot.

  5. Oh gosh I was going to pick Pan’s Labyrinth when i first read the topic and then forgot. I love this film! It is so sad and creepy when she tasted the food and got chased by ole one eye (OK don’t take that in a dirty way:)) I have not seen the other 2 but they sound intriguing

    1. Love it that you loved Pan’d Labyrinth. That’s also the first movie popping into my brain 🙂
