Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) – Review

Read Time:5 Minute, 4 Second

It is difficult for a woman to define her feelings in a language chiefly made by men to express theirs.” — Bathsheba Everdene

Far from the Madding Crowd is an essential novel for British literature and, particularly, Thomas Hardy whose popularity skyrocketed following this.

This seemingly beautiful love story (regardless genre cliche) stands erect against the odds. There’s a sense of prudery, but this is not about that; it’s about sense of subversiveness and, more of it, convention-busting subject, in which female character challenges her sexuality “indirectly.”

Director Thomas Vinterberg cautiously beautifully catches the ambiance—even the subversiveness on this fourth adaptation of the novel—and translates it into his huge canvas of picturesque period drama with excellent cast.

This multi-angular love story centers around Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), a free-spirited young woman living as a lady-farmer whose beauty attracts three suitors with desire to marry her.

Among those three suitors, Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts)—a formerly prosperous farmer is the most sincere. Yet, calamity overthrows him; meanwhile, fortune comes over Bathsheba—she now owns a farm and hires Gabriel.

While she’s getting rich, she met William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a merchant whose wealth might equal Bathsheba’s, yet appears to be much older. Thing is, Boldwood admires Gabriel’s fervor and sincerity.

Yet, odds might possibly favor the third suitor, a broken-hearted soldier with charms and impetuous behavior, Sergeant Troy (Tom Sturridge).

Vinterberg spends most times to convince us how beautiful this story is—taking care of the details and creating a flimsy atmosphere that might satisfy visual-admirer. Details provide depth to the story, but the characters are making it more sympathetic.

As I mentioned previously, the casts are excellent and that’s true. Mulligan excels in emanating Bathsheba’s free spirit and her penchant to bust conventions along with her independence of choosing her sexuality. Among the three suitors, Schoenaerts develop interesting chemistry with Mulligan, but it’s Sheen’s wistful portrayal of Boldwood is heart-wrenching. Sturridge gets a very strong scene—the essential swordmanship scene—which might win the whole movie, but overall, he’s the weakest among the three. Such an irony.

Yet, I won’t lie in telling you that it’s a perfect story. I have mentioned some genre cliches in the beginning, but that’s not all. Vinterberg’s highlight in exposing Bathsheba’s subversiveness unravels the weakest point of the story—the game of thoughts to lead audience in predicting who the eventual groom for Bathsheba is.

The pacing is somehow terrible, culminating towards the third act, which supposedly being the strongest act. Not once I felt a terrible boredom in following the story; if not for the whimsical visuals and strong performance by the actors, I believe, I would have fallen asleep somewhere between the middle act.

My final verdict states Vinterberg’s strong direction and visual quality might lead Far from the Madding Crowd to a right track, but his persistence in uproaring Mulligan’s subversive portrayal neglects the fact that this is a pretty complex story a little.

Kesimpulan akhirnya: Penyutradaraan Vinterberg yang solid mampu menggiring Far from the Madding Crowd ke jalur yang tepat, tapi keinginannya untuk menampilkan sisi subversif Mulligan membuatnya mengabaikan kompleksitas cerita ini at the very core.
