Welcome back to Thursday Movie Picks hosted by Wandering through the Shelves! As for this Thursday, I picked three movies with an umbrella theme: Con Artist. Yeah, that man who cheats or tricks others by persuading them to believe something that is not true.
As it might turn out, there are many legendary con artists out there. Their life and wit were so intriguing, therefore, everybody wants to retell their story in any medium. I guess there will a theme within theme on my picks this week.
So, let me present you my picks.
01. American Hustle (2013)
David O. Russell’s biggest loser in Oscars is a sporadic take on con-artistry. Loosely based on actual ABSCAM a.k.a. Arab scam scandal emerged during the late 1970s until early 1980s. Instead of the adorable hair-do by its main characters, American Hustle is still an intriguing con artist drama I’ve ever seen. Not only because it’s involving a couple of scammer and federal agent in a setup full of clever dialogues, it really has a chemistry with its character. It’s everyone’s darling before the Oscar came nowhere.
02. The Wolf of Wallstreet (2013)
The one and only Jordan Belfort, as a real-life figure, was a perfect con artist until he got arrested. Same as Leonardo DiCaprio: he’s the best Oscar contender that year before he lose it to Chiwetel Ejiofor. The Wolf of Wallstreet, though, is still a very exuberantly filthy side of glamour by Martin Scorsese.
03. Catch Me If You Can (2002)
It’s another failed Oscar attempt by DiCaprio, although this one is also very close to it. DiCaprio is another real-life figure, Frank Abagnale Jr.—a doctor, a lawyer, and a co-pilot, but most essentially, a con artist. His life was an ace until Carl Hanratty a.k.a. Tom Hanks comes to catch him.
