Thursday Movie Picks #5: Movies About Artists (Painters)

Read Time:2 Minute, 0 Second

Welcome back to Thursday Movie Picks by Wandering through the Shelves! In case you’re interested, the rules are simple: based on the theme of the week, pick three to five movies and share the reason. Should anyone be interested in joining in, feel free to visit the main page here.
This week’s theme is: Movies about Artists (Painters). For this week, I don’t specifically pick movies with real artists there (although there is one); and not essentially painters, but someone who basically paints. Before we get to the list, here are some honorable mentions: Mr. Turner (2014) and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008). Without further ado, here’s the pick for movies about painters!
01. The Mist (2007)
Thomas Jane – The Mist (2007) – Frank Darabont
Many people forget that The Mist is actually a movie about a painter, a film-poster artist to be exact; or, at least, it becomes one at one point. Thomas Jane’s ill-fated character, David Drayton, is a painter painting The Gunslinger from Stephen King’s Dark Towers. He leaves his house to town to buy some tools for repairing, apparently, before the tragedy happens. The significance of his occupation in the film is unknown; but he’s after all the epicenter of the film.
02. Big Eyes (2014)
Amy Adams & Christoph Waltz – Big Eyes (2014) – Tim Burton
Big Eyes is a biopic about Margaret Keane whose works—paintings of people with the titular trait—were credited as the work of her fraudulent husband. Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz both perform amazingly in this cunning drama that marks Tim Burton’s most ordinary work. Although this film features less Tim Burton’s niches than his other films, Big Eyes has all the quirkiest Burton-esque details, which makes it a beautiful film.
03. The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015)
Bel Powley – The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015)
It’s a very compelling sexual awakening drama. Minnie (Bel Powley) is a teenage cartoonist in the middle of her intimidating sexual desire that begins uncontrollably arising. There are moments where Minnie’s drawings reflecting his sexual journey as a teenage girl. There’s some shade of quirkiness, teen angst and vibrant colors everywhere.

The Mist is quite underrated as it’s a film that needs to be revisited every once in a while. Diary of a Teenage Girl is an awesome and inspired pick as that is something I didn’t go for in my choices.

True! The Mist should be revisited once in a while. It’s a great narrative body!
      Thanks for stopping by!

Nice picks! I never would’ve thought of The Mist here. Big Eyes I never saw, I didn’t care much for Diary but I loved Bel’s performance and I thought the animated parts of the film were really good. That’s an inspired choice.

The Mist is a hidden gem about painter for me. Well, if you like Tim Burton’s work, Big Eyes might be disappointing, but the drama is strong.
In contrary, I love The Diary so much, but yes, especially for Bel’s performance!

Nice off center picks none of which I’ve seen. The Mist looked disturbing to me so I’ve never been drawn to it. Nor have I been to Diary of a Teenage Girl, the title just doesn’t seem made for me! I can’t abide Amy Adams so Big Eyes is one I’ll never see.
Films about painters proved tougher than I expected. I had to cast about to find three that I’d seen and liked and end up with these.
The Naked Maja (1958)-Tale of the renowned painter Francisco Goya (Anthony Franciosa) and his passionate affair with the Duchess of Alba (Ava Gardner) , purportedly the model for the title painting. Set against Spain’s war with France and the Inquisition, though shot in Italy, the film is a visual treat with a good performance by Gardner but missing a certain spark, perhaps due to the fact that the stars detested each other behind the scenes.
Lust for Life (1956)-Biography of Vincent Van Gogh with an intense, driven performance by near lookalike Kirk Douglas as the tortured artist. Since he wasn’t acknowledged until after his death the film is a relentlessly grim look at the cost and weight of unrecognized genius. Overlong but loaded with works by the master.
The Moon and Sixpence (1942)-Inspired by the life of Paul Gauguin and based on the Somerset Maugham novel, the film tells the story of Charles Strickland (George Sanders) who throws his staid life as a married stockbroker away to run away to the South Seas to paint with nary a thought to the consequences. Well-acted with a superior cast but the lead character is an almost completely despicable person so it’s difficult to care too much for his story or fate.

I understand why you miss Big Eyes and The Mist, but I suggest you watch The Diary of a Teenage Girl!
I’ve never watched any of your suggestion, since I’m always sucker for classics. Yet, I love those popular works from Goya and van Gogh. I mean they’re not exceptional, but they’re more intriguing than eye-catching.

Diary of a Teenage girl reminds me of all the titles like that for Tv back in the 1970’s but I bet this one is much, much better. It sounds quirky yet relevant. I’m not sure I would want to see The Mist because I get scared so easily and this picture above is eerie enough. I want to see Big Eyes because of the subject matter but I never liked her art….actually hated her art. The big newt eyes were just bleccchhh to me.

Never heard about the tv series, but this one I loved most!
The Mist isn’t that scary actually. In fact, it’s just another monster film.
Lol the eyes are cute! Like Japanese anime characters

I’ve seen The Mist but would have never of thought to include it. Big Eyes has been picked a lot (in past weeks as well) so I may check it out

Yeah, The Mist wasn’t actually a film about a painter, but since the main protagonist is a painter, I’d chosen it.
Sure you need to check on Big Eyes although it might not be that excellent.

Thank you for visiting. The only movie pick you featured that I know is “Big Eyes” but I have yet to see it. “The Mist” stands a good chance as something I’d like to see. I will check out trailers for it and “The Diary of a Teenage Girl”. I appreciate your reviews and recommendations. Have a good weekend!

Excellent pick on The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Not keen on her art but everything else about this film is brilliant!

Great you liked it! The art is a bit kinky and senile, but it represents the theme of the movie.
