Thursday Movie Picks #39: All in the Family Edition: Adopted/Foster Families

Here comes the last Thursday of the month, where we got All in the Family Edition in Thursday Movie Picks hosted by Wandering through the Shelves. This week’s theme is Adopted/Foster Families—which makes me excited ’cause I could immediately think of 3 movies to pick aside from Tarzan, who is adapted by gorillas.

So, here’s my pick!

01. Orphan (2009)

orphan

Sometimes, the most generic cliche in stories about adoption is the fact that the foster parents are as cruel as hell. Yet, Orphan goes the way around. What if your adopted child isn’t what she looks like? Not an innocent, little girl who would always obey you. That twist.

02. Hansel and Gretel (2007)

Hansel and Gretel-01

Similar to Orphan, Hansel and Gretel is not a typical adopted/foster families movie. Talking about the adoption (who adopt or who’s adopted) might give a very blunt spoiler; but I swear, this Korean fantasy thriller isn’t like what you’re thinking. It has piles of absurdity and twists that, instead of shoving you away, keep you attached.

03. Juno (2007)

juno

Juno MacGuff accidentally got pregnant but she’s a school girl. She refused doing abortion and decided to give the baby up for adoption. Juno is very compelling due to its strong and original story, and most importantly, to Ellen Page strong performance as an ill-prepared pregnant lady. To tell you the truth, perhaps, this is my personal favorite among the picks.

Honorable mention: Short Term 12 (2013)

ST12-Sinekdoks-2

It’s not a hundred percent about adopted/foster families, instead, a facility for troubled kids. Well, there’s some issue about adoption though told in the perspective of this group facility. It’s a very compelling story about troubled teenagers and how they cope it with the limitation of real ‘parents’.

  1. Nice picks! I threw Short Term 12 in my picks, it totally counts. I love that you went with Juno, that’s a very inspired choice. Orphan is getting a lot of love so far this week. Also a great film.

  2. I liked but didn’t love Juno…what I did love about the movie was Allison Janney and JK Simmons as her parents. Haven’t seen the others and they don’t sound like my thing but interesting picks.

  3. orphan sounds scary and may give me nightmares since I am such a scaredy cat. Hansel and Gretel sounds quirky and love Juno. I thought that was a great gem-love the parents of Ellen page’s character

    1. True that! Juno’s a very lovely story. Not always with Juno, but her parents and the couple who wants to adopt her child. All’s so beautiful.
Anyway, I don’t suggest you watching Orphan and Hansel&Gretel if so :))
