TOP 7: Dragons in Movie

Read Time:3 Minute, 19 Second

7 dragons from 7 movies to fire-breath the cinema.”

After the exuberant desolation of Smaug in The Battle of The Five Armies lately, an idea popped in my mind to dedicate a post to my favorite dragons in movies.

Dragons, in many countries, in many cultures, in many legends and tales in the entire world, have many different manifestations and all; but, that’s not the point, the point is: people believes they exist. Some say they’re fierce beasts, some say they bring fortunes, some say they look like lizards, some say they look like dinosaurs or even snakes. And cinema loves them!

Here, 7 cinematic dragons I like most!

07. DRACO

Appeared in: Dragonheart (1996)

A rather silly movie with a great dragon, Draco–a hybrid of triceratops and pterodactyl. Draco is the prototype of Cumberbatch-faced Smaug as this creature gives earlier views of how dragon speaks the way man speak—with Sean Connery’s voice.

06. KING GHIDORAH

Appeared in: Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964), Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965), Destroy All Monsters (1968), Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972), Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993), Rebirth of Mothra III (1998), Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)

Godzilla might be the most badass giant lizard in cinema with blue flame breath, but, what’s more spectacular than the kaiju king is King Ghidorah. This Godzilla’s arch-enemy, a three-headed dragon, always appear in Godzilla’s biggest battle; even he’s gonna get an appearance in Godzilla 2.

05. MUSHU

Appeared in: Mulan (1998)

Not only big, badass dragons make to this list, Mushu, a small Chinese-Western hybrid dragon with his crimson skin and old Chinese mustache, makes it. He might be silly but he can still burn things to help Mulan. Little dragon with big talks, who can resist?

04. MALE DRAGON

Appeared in: Reign of Fire (2002)

Even in the modern world, dragons still have a place in the earth—devastating everything, causing an apocalypse, and reigning over everything. In this B-movie sci-fi with Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale on pitch, male dragons find a way to terrify people—Male Dragons are the real figure of dragon as threats to human. A vicious, merciless beast is all.

03. HAKU

Appeared in: A Spirited Away (2001)

Haku, the boy that helps Chihiro in the spirit world, is really a manifestation of a river spirit that can transform to a  “Long” kind of dragon. As a dragon, he doesn’t have rough scales, but enchanting with furs; and he’s very friendly and helpful to Chihiro. With Haku and the whole fancy creatures of the spirit world, what doesn’t make A Spirited Away a Ghibli’s grand masterpiece?

02. SMAUG

Appeared in: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies (2014)

Appears as the main trouble in The Hobbit trilogy, Smaug is truly the real popular dragon right now. No doubt, he’s got all the qualities to be a real dragon: fire breath, imperishable scales, greed of golds, and desolation. With Cumberbatch’s face and voice, Smaug nails it—a dragon with most fangirls.

01. TOOTHLESS

Appeared in: How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon (2014)

A hybrid of your favorite pet and a vicious beast, that’s Toothless. As the last kind of Night Fury, Toothless is far from being hazardous; he’s friendly and cute, moreover, with the assistance of Hiccup. Lately, Toothless, even, has the capability to be the alpha dragon and makes friend with other dragons from Berk. No cute dragon can be more reliable in battle like Toothless, the one and the only.

There are so many other dragons in movies that, probably, deserves to be in this list; but once again, I only chose seven of them to be my most favorite. You might have your own favorite, right? Let me know your own favorites!

I was going through this list like “where the fuck is Toothless?” lol I’m glad to see he’s #1. He’s my favorite too.

    1. Seriously, he deserves the number 1. Everyone’s favorite and he’s not even an antagonist.
      Thanks for stopping by, Brittani!

DragonHeart is a childhood favorite of mine but looking back on it now, it would have been better if it hadn’t been for executive meddling. The film suffered a number of problems that justifies a remake. Mainly that it had a promising premise that was executed poorly and the technology at the time held it back. That’s why I’m petitioning for a remake more faithful to the novelization. It was written by Charles Edward Pogue based on his own screenplay, and from reading it myself, I can say it is truly amazing, what the film should have been. It fleshes out the characters, their motivations, the world they inhabit, and there is more direct interaction with Draco.

I’ve reached out to DragonHeart creator Patrick Read Johnson on Twitter. He’s all in for a remake and supports the petition. Maybe Liam Neeson will be game for playing Bowen as he was originally supposed to. If done properly, the remake could be the mature and transcendent film that the original was intended to be.
