A Season with: Game of Thrones – Season 4 (2014)

Read Time:25 Minute, 4 Second

Episode 6 – The Laws of Gods and Men

THE KINGSLAYER BROTHERS | What’s more vigorous than seeing two Lannister boys team up and style themselves as kingslayer brothers? Nothing. As we know, Jaime is styled as Kingslayer in aftermath of killing the Mad King Aerys Targaryen, and he’s still a man of Kingsguard. Tyrion is not only accused of being a kinslayer—for killing his own nephew—but he is also a kingslayer and is sentenced to death. Such an irony, isn’t it?

BETRAYING TYRION | Upon his trial for regicide, witnesses are called upon the court to testify against Tyrion. The climax is: Shae is called upon the court, before three judges—Tywin Lannister, Mace Tyrell, and Oberyn Martell. Yet, she betrays Tyrion once and for all—putting a man’s fate on the tip of her tongue. In response to that, Tyrions pleads with the best he can to prove his innocence by demanding a trial by combat—so emotionally, so grievous for The Rains of Castamere to follow. Making it the best scene of Season 4.

Episode 7 – Mockingbird

THE MOON DOOR | In Eyrie, Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish finally marries Lysa Arryn. And yet, Littlefinger’s intimacy with his fake bastard Alayne Stone—Sansa Stark—keeps feeding Lysa with jealousy. She’s so jealous that she threatens Sansa; Littlefinger calms his silly wife while revealing that she only loves one woman in his life. When Lysa learns that it was her sister whom Littlefinger loves, she is flying through the Moon Door of Eyrie. Another questionable scheme made by Petyr.

Episode 8 – The Mountain and The Viper

JORAH THE EXILED | A letter is sent to Meereen and is acquired by Ser Barristan Selmy. Over the reading of that letter, Daenerys learns treacherous acts has been wielded upon her. Jorah Mormont, her protector, has betrayed her by selling information to the Seven Kingdoms about Daenerys. Let’s go further back. It’s known that Daenerys will know three betrayals (on a prophecy in House of the Undying). One for blood, one for gold, and one for love. Is it Mirri Maz Dum who betrays her for blood? And is it Jorah who betrays her for gold? If so, who will betrays her for love? Or I just misread the prophecy.

RAMSAY SNOW BOLTON | Upon his ruthless acts and mischievous works that serve his family great honors, Ramsay Bolton is finally legitimized as the lawful son of Roose Bolton, and therefore, is called Ramsay Bolton. On his excellent day, he swears to his father that he will uphold the family tradition; he proves it true. The sicko Ramsay Bolton flays his enemies as portrayed in the sigil of House Boltons. In the future, he will pose as a dangerous threat to anyone, most notably, to the one in The Wall.

TRIAL BY COMBAT | Oberyn Martell finally serves as Tyrion’s champion in the trial by combat. His opponent is monstrous, but he knows the drill. There is a vengeance buried shallow on Oberyn’s soul; and he knows how to use it against Cersei’s champion, Gregor “The Mountain That Rides” Clegane—who murders his sister Elia along with her children. The flame of vengeance burns fast as he swiftly marches against The Mountain. Oberyn stabs The Mountain several times with his spear and his opponent is down. As he seeks for The Mountain’s confession, he lowers his defense—leading him to his demise. Only Oberyn knows whether his thirst for vengeance is fulfilled.

Episode 9 – The Watchers on the Wall

VOWS OF THE NIGHT’S WATCH | The wildlings raid the Wall from all sides. The Brother of Night’s Watch fights valiantly against the band of wildlings—free folks, Thenns, mammoths, and… GIANTS. The mightiest of all giants, Mag the Mighty is able to penetrate the outer gate of The Wall; and Jon Snow commands Grenn with other brothers to hold the inner gate. Let’s forget the monumental Donal Noye, ’cause we have Grenn and his five companions chanting out their vows to the Brotherhood of Night’s Watch and to the realm. Nobody knows how they fight, but we know that they kill Mag and hold the inner gate. What a sacrifice to remember by book purists.

YOU (ALWAYS) KNOW NOTHING, JON SNOW | During the tumult in The Wall, Jon runs amok—killing as many wildlings as possible, including killing Styr the Thenn. He never realizes that someone watches over him to find the right moment to kill him. When Jon realizes that Yggrite has aimed her arrow straight to Jon, Olly—the new recruit—shoots her from the back.  As she lays dying, Jon approaches and they talk for the first time since they’re through. You know nothing, Jon Snow. What doesn’t he know? Her feeling?

Episode 10 – The Children

STANNIS OF THE NORTH | Stannis’ army comes as the only power responding to the letters sent by The Night’s Watch to all around Seven Kingdoms. Stannis marches (most likely through the Eastwatch-by-the-Sea) north beyond The Wall and raids the wildlings as well as capture The King-beyond-the-Wall, Mance Rayder. The era of The King on the Wall has cometh.

CHILDREN OF THE FOREST AND THE GRENSEER | Bran and his companions finally reaches the weirwood promised by the Three-Eyed Raven. To their surprise, a herd of wights assault them in rage and kills Jojen Reed. As they finds no escape from their demise, a woman with size of a child helps them and leads them to the one they’ve been looking for. In the end, we learn that we have met the last kinds of children of the forest and the greenseer a.k.a the Three-Eyed Raven. What makes it even more surprising is, this moment is taken from the fifth book ‘A Dance with Dragons‘—leaving us puzzled which road Bran will take on the next season.

BREAKER OF CHAINS CHAIN HER DRAGON | Daenerys the Breaker of Chains accepts a lamentation of a weeping father who cannot speak the Common Tongue. We have ever seen someone brings scorched skeleton of a goat—a result of Daenerys’ dragons’ works. Now we see something else that forces Dany to chain two of her dragons—Viserion and Rhaegal—in catacomb—while Drogon is nowhere to find. Surprisingly, this event is also taken from the fifth book ‘A Dance with Dragons‘.

THE BEAUTY AND THE HOUND | To everybody’s surprise, Brienne of Tarth a.k.a Brienne the Beauty and Podrick Payne encounter Sandor Clegane and Arya Stark on their way to Eyrie. Brienne explains the oath she keeps to Catelyn Stark, but Arya doesn’t believe in her tale. Brienne insists on taking Arya in custody, but The Hound insists that Arya won’t go with the woman paid by Lannisters. In the end, they fight each other in a fight that leaves no one wins. The Hound is dying, Brienne loses Arya, while Arya goes as she will.

TYWIN LANNISTER’S DEMISE | Look at the crossbow. Look at who fires it. Look at the privy. Look at nothing but the Lord of Casterly Rock. Look at the Hand of the King. It’s too good to be a spoiler.
