Welcome back to Thursday Movie Picks by Wandering through the Shelves! In case you’re interested, the rules are simple: based on the theme of the week, pick three to five movies and share the reason. Should anyone be interested in joining in, feel free to visit the main page here.
This week’s theme is: Movies about Artists (Painters). For this week, I don’t specifically pick movies with real artists there (although there is one); and not essentially painters, but someone who basically paints. Before we get to the list, here are some honorable mentions: Mr. Turner (2014) and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008). Without further ado, here’s the pick for movies about painters!
01. The Mist (2007)
Many people forget that The Mist is actually a movie about a painter, a film-poster artist to be exact; or, at least, it becomes one at one point. Thomas Jane’s ill-fated character, David Drayton, is a painter painting The Gunslinger from Stephen King’s Dark Towers. He leaves his house to town to buy some tools for repairing, apparently, before the tragedy happens. The significance of his occupation in the film is unknown; but he’s after all the epicenter of the film.
02. Big Eyes (2014)
Big Eyes is a biopic about Margaret Keane whose works—paintings of people with the titular trait—were credited as the work of her fraudulent husband. Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz both perform amazingly in this cunning drama that marks Tim Burton’s most ordinary work. Although this film features less Tim Burton’s niches than his other films, Big Eyes has all the quirkiest Burton-esque details, which makes it a beautiful film.
03. The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015)
It’s a very compelling sexual awakening drama. Minnie (Bel Powley) is a teenage cartoonist in the middle of her intimidating sexual desire that begins uncontrollably arising. There are moments where Minnie’s drawings reflecting his sexual journey as a teenage girl. There’s some shade of quirkiness, teen angst and vibrant colors everywhere.
