Review: Mary Is Happy, Mary Is Happy (2013)

Back in 2013, director Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit (Happy Old Year, Die Tomorrow) experimented with a unique narrative quest—a slice-of-life drama of an unusual source. Mary Is Happy, Mary Is Happy is the product, based on 410 consecutive tweets from a Thai teenager known as Mary Malony a.k.a. @marylony (still active tweeting from 2009 until today, with total followers around 554K). Every single tweet, mostly in the Thai language, appears on-screen via title-card every minute or so guiding us through the daily life of Mary (Patcha Poonpiriya), which might turn bizarre in one moment and banal at another. What the Hell …oween! #4: The Sacrament (2013)

Tepat di malam Halloween, terbitlah pula post terakhir dari serial What the Hell ...oween! A Collaborative Post persembahan sinekdoks dan hzboy a.k.a. So, let's check Hestia's take for this! (more…)

What the Hell …oween #3: We Are What We Are (2013)

Terlambat 3 hari dari deadline-nya, akhirnya post #3 dari serial What the Hell ...oween! A Collaborative Post dari Sinekdoks dan Hzboy a.k.a. Hestia Istiviani ini akhirnya naik juga. Setelah mengulas dua film yang baru saja tayang di bioskop (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children dan Blair Witch X The Blair Witch Project), di minggu ketiga ini, kami throw back ke beberapa tahun sebelumnya; kami mengulas We Are What We Are (2013), sebuah remake dari film Mexico berjudul sama. Filmnya sendiri sebenarnya cukup menimbulkan buzz bagi para horror aficionado pada tahun 2013, namun skalanya yang kecil membuatnya mudah tertumpuk film-film lain di daftar must-watch, hingga kini ia tergali lagi. Filmnya sendiri cukup misterius, lihat saja posternya or judulnya. So, let’s see Hestia’s take. ...

A Touch of Sin (2013) – Review

"The gods are to blame – if you have grievances, tell heaven about them!" This violent, outrageous and brilliantly cinematographed movie by Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhang-ke tells about four random crime stories based on real events that spread out in some places in China. The English title is likely an Easter egg to 1971’s wuxia movie, A Touch of Zen. A Touch of Sin was nominated at Cannes and winning Best Screenplay nomination.  (more…)

In Fear (2013)

One thing to know before watching Jeremy Lovering's In Fear is: the unique approach conducted to produce this film. Lovering shot everything in sequence without telling the casts about the script---leaving them puzzled and engulfed by real fear on-screen and off-screen. More fears inside!

The Garden of Words / 言の葉の庭 / Kotonoha no Niwa (2013)

Clocking in at 46 minutes, The Garden of Words briefly wraps up all Makoto Shinkai's earmarks, with gorgeous Malickian pictures and a heart-wrenching story told mostly in monologues. As proof of his natural approach (shown in the visual elements and the lack of fantasy taste), this movie has been my second favorite feature of Shinkai's masterpiece (after 5 Centimeters per Second). Baca review ini dalam Bahasa Indonesia: klik di sini! The story revolves around, Takao (voiced by Miyu Irino), a 15-year-old boy, who dreams of being a shoemaker. On rainy days, he likes to skip classes and goes to a garden to practice making real shoes. There, he meets a much older woman, Yukino (Kana Hanazawa), who he finds very mysterious by a chance. Every rainy day, both of them meet in that gard...
